ETSU's Information Technology Services office would like to alert the ETSU community of a critical security patch recently released for Windows computers. Microsoft has discovered a vulnerability in the Remote Desktop service which could allow an attacker to gain remote access without the user's actions or knowledge. Although no known exploits have been discovered in the wild, the patch is still considered critical due to the potential severity of an exploit. The patch is therefore being deployed to ETSU PCs ahead of our normal Windows update schedule.
For that reason, ITS recommends that you install the patch through Software Center manually at your convenience, so that you have more control over when your computer reboots. This will make you less likely to lose any unsaved work.
Any unpatched PCs not powered on and connected to ETSU's network on Friday evening will have the update applied the next time they are connected on campus.
If you have any questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
